Archie

Archie is adopted. Archie is a 9 year old castrated male. His owner sadly passed away.

Archie has lived with children from new-born upwards. He is great with other dogs.

No cats, he does not like them or other small furries.

We have found him to be an absolute gent in the kennels, he is a lovely dog.

If you can offer Archie a sofa then please fill out an application.

Archie’s Assessment

Kennel behaviour

Archie was already out of his kennel when I arrived. We did attempt to put him back in but he was reluctant. We decided to do the assessment outdoors first and assess his kennel behaviour afterwards.
When we returned to the kennel block, Archie was again reluctant to enter the kennels. He showed no negative behaviour but sat down and was reluctant to move. We used high value treats to encourage him to move toward the kennel and gradually we were able to coax him in. Once in the kennel with us, Archie was happy to take treats and showed good behaviour at all times.

Handling

Archie was affectionate and happy to be petted and fussed. He is soft mouthed and does not snatch at treats. I was able to touch him all over without any reaction. He was easy to put on and take off lead and was compliant at all times. He walks well on the lead, staying at his handler’s side on a loose lead. He was able to pass traffic, animals, people etc without any reaction at all.
He was off lead in the paddock and recalled well for a treat.

Sociability

Archie is a mild-mannered, calm dog and shows good impulse control. He has clearly received some training and responds to cues such as Sit, Down and Wait. He is motivated by treats and is very focussed and compliant.
He showed no reactivity to other dogs in the kennel block or dogs and other animals he encountered on the farm. There were dogs, cows and horses present. He was calm at all times. He enjoyed interacting and was happy to play.

Arousal/Reactivity

Please give details of reactivity on a scale of 1 to 5 (where 1 = low & 5 = high)
Reactivity – 0

Archie showed no reactivity at all and appeared completely unconcerned about anything in this environment.

Possession

Archie was keen on playing tug but was happy to exchange the toy for a treat. He was soft mouthed at all times and did not snatch. He also enjoyed fetching a ball but again was very amenable in dropping it for a reward. He showed good impulse control at all times around the toys.

Comments

Archie is a lovely boy, sociable and friendly at all times. He responds well to instructions and is motivated by treats and toys. He has clearly had some good training and is well mannered and extremely easy to handle. He showed no negative reactions to anything during his assessment. He enjoys play but is generally calm and well mannered.
He does appear somewhat uncomfortable in his movements. I would recommend a thorough Musculo-skeletal assessment by a vet. His discomfort does not appear to cause any change in his sociability and tolerance of handling.
Archie is a perfect dog for someone looking for an older dog who will quickly fit into a new environment. He does seem a little stressed by the kennel environment which is to be expected. I feel sure that he would quickly form a good bond with a new owner and would be a lovely pet.
