Beautiful Enya is 4 years old, spayed and came to us as her owner could no longer care for her due to ill health.
Enya is a very sweet and affectionate girl who is friendly to everyone that she meets. She is very anxious though and vocal at the start of walks – this is starting to calm down though as she settles into kennel life. She will bark at other dogs when out and about. She has played with a male dog in the kennels but she will guard her toys so needs to be an only dog in the house. Enya has bags of potential in the right, patient home.
Enya’s Assessment
Kennel behaviour
Enya was extremely excited as we approached her kennel. She was jumping up and and down at the bars and barking. It was difficult to get a lead on her and as soon as she exited the kennel, she pulled strongly to get out of the kennel block. She did not pay any attention to dog in adjacent kennels. She would not engage with me and just wanted to get out.
Handling
Enya was hyper vigilant when out of the kennel block but was not reactive to any animals in the environment including cats, horses and cattle.
I was able to touch Enya all over without any reaction. She was not particularly affectionate but just wanted to play.
She did pull strongly and needs some work on her lead walking. She does not recall except for a ball. She will always fetch a ball and bring it back to you so this will help enormously with off lead work.
Sociability
Enya did not show any reactivity to other dogs other than when another dog rushed at the fence of the paddock. This dog barked at her and she barked back, which is to be expected. I was, however, able to call her away to play with her ball. DRUE volunteers report that she will play with other dogs but is a little intolerant and has been aggressive at times.
Enya is very good with people and shows no negative reactions at all. She is not food motivated and will not engage for a treat but is very ball driven.
Arousal/Reactivity
Please give details of reactivity on a scale of 1 to 5 (where 1 = low & 5 = high)
Reactivity – 0
Enya showed no reactivity at all to anything in the environment including other animals or traffic passing by.
Possession
Enya is very ball driven and has an excellent retrieve. She does not snatch for the ball and will wait very well.
Comments
Enya is a lovely dog with a very nice temperament. She was extremely excitable in the kennel and was very keen to exit, with boisterous behaviour
and pulling on the lead. This may well be very different once she is settled in a home environment. Although she also pulled on the lead out of the
kennel block, her behaviour did improve once in the exercise area.
She has clearly had some training and can show good impulse control, sitting and waiting when asked. Jumping up is minimal and this can easily be addressed by teaching a good Sit to Greet protocol. Work definitely needs to be on her lead walking. Her recall will be reliable as long as she is
playing ball. She is not food motivated but is very ball driven.
Given a previous incident of aggression with another dog, I would recommend a home as a single dog.
