Meet Rocco
Rocco is a four-year-old entire male who deserved so much better than the start he got. He was taken to a vet to be put to sleep — but the vet refused, and called us instead. We were told he was terrified of men and had been kept in a crate so small it left sores on his back legs. We’ll never know the full story. What we do know is that every dog deserves a second chance, and Rocco’s has already begun.
How he’s settling in
For a dog with Rocco’s history, his arrival went better than anyone dared hope. He was dropped off by a male volunteer and met by a male staff member, and though he was wary — hanging back at the rear of his kennel, overwhelmed by it all — he held it together.
Time with our female volunteers is where his confidence really took root. From there he’s gone from strength to strength, and he now enjoys the company of men too, leaning in for affection and bounding happily around our secure field. His lead walking was once a real challenge — he’d lunge at passing cars — but with routine and patience that’s steadily settling.
We can only imagine what he’s been through. What shines through, despite all of it, is how much he wants to learn and please.
What Rocco needs from a home
- An experienced owner who can keep building his confidence and training.
- A home without other male dogs — Rocco doesn’t get along with them. He has previously lived happily alongside a female dog, so he may be able to do so again with careful introductions.
- Children aged 12 and over, as he’s friendly but boisterous.
- A cat-free home.
Where he’s heading
Rocco now responds to his name, knows his basic commands, and has excellent recall in the secure field. He’s affectionate, full of life, and greets the people he loves with his whole heart. He’s still a work in progress: his new owner will need to continue his training, and he shouldn’t be let off lead outside a secure area until a strong bond and real trust are firmly in place.
If you have the time, patience, and experience to give Rocco the home he’s earned, we’d love to hear from you.
